What is Year 5 all about?

In Year 5, we welcome the children into Upper Key Stage 2. We begin to expect the children to take more responsibility for their belongings, their behaviour and their learning to begin preparing them for the transition to high school at the end of Year 6.

The children have fantastic opportunities in Year 5. This year, the children have the opportunity to learn to play the clarinet in their music lessons, as well as receiving external cricket coaching as part of their PE curriculum.

Our teachers are Miss Green (5KG) and Miss Deeny (5SD) and we are lucky enough to have the support of our two fabulous TAs, Mrs Dean and Mrs Emmerson.

Homework

Homework is set for Year 5 on a Friday on Seesaw. We expect it to be posted on Seesaw ready for the following Thursday when it is due in!

PE

Year 5's PE days are Tuesday and Thursday and children must come to school in their PE kit on these days. On a Thursday up until October Half Term, our outdoor PE will be led by external cricket coaches.

OUR LEARNING

We start the year in Year 5 by learning all about Space through Science, Mantle and even English! We are reading Cosmic by Frank Cottrell Boyce at the moment and we are really enjoying it. We also use Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly and Winifred Conkling in our learning, which is a true story that teaches us all about the role of four Black women in the "Space Race" to see which country could get astronauts into space first!

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

The month of October is Black History Month and Year 5 are learning all about some significant Black people that have made a real impact on history. We enjoyed learning about Martin Luther King and listening to his famous "I Have A Dream" speech, and we were amazed to see the difference he began to make for Black people and how his actions still influence people today . We are looking forward to learning about many more Black people who made a real difference to history!
