MUSIC
Intent
Here at Webheath we love to express ourselves through music. We value self-expression, creativity and the enjoyment that it brings. Music contributes to the development of the children's personality and their wellbeing.
Inspired by a wide range of music from different genres, composers and eras, the children perform, describe, compose, and transcribe music together.
Implementation
Our children begin their musical journey in the Early Years where they enjoy singing familiar songs, exploring rhythm and rhyme. They learn to play instruments with increasing control and express their ideas through explicit teaching and continuous provision.
In Key Stages One and Two, the learning follows the Chris Quigley Essentials Curriculum. We also use the Music Model Curriculum to add greater depth to our teaching and ensure that we are up to date with best practice. Music also enhances our creative curriculum, where it is often used to compliment learning in other subjects.
In addition to our curriculum coverage, all pupils are able to access instrumental tuition as well as take part in singing and performances across the school.
Our offer is currently in a two-year, catch-up phase following the disruption caused by the global pandemic.
Impact
Music plays an important role in the life of Webheath Academy Primary School. The pupils sing beautifully, and this brings our community together, enhancing our collective worship. All pupils have access to musical development, that breaks down the barriers, that often hinder musical confidence in adult life. Children who would like to take their Music further can access musical tuition and extra-curricular activities. We are currently striving to reintroduce activities that had to be halted over the last couple of years.
The joy and confidence that music brings aids pupil personal development as they persevere, listen, cooperate, play and perform together.
