Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE)
At Webheath Academy Primary School, Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is an embedded part of our broad and balanced curriculum. We recognise the importance of PSHE and the part it plays in the education of our children. We believe that PSHE enables and supports children to gain the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy and fulfilling lives. British values are promoted through the overarching aims and objectives of PSHE by supporting our children to become responsible members of society, as well as preparing them for life and work in modern Britain.
Our PSHE and Relationships Curriculum
The Government have endorsed guidance and materials provided by the PSHE Association as a suitable way to deliver the PSHE curriculum and here at Webheath Academy Primary School, we use these materials as a basis for our teaching of PSHE.
PSHE has three strands in our school - Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World. We have structured our PSHE curriculum as follows:-
Health and Wellbeing |
Relationships |
Living in the Wider World |
Healthy Lifestyles |
Feelings and Emotions |
Rights and Responsibilities |
Growing and Changing |
Healthy Relationships |
Environment |
Keeping Safe |
Valuing Difference |
Money |
We encourage active engagement in lessons by allowing the children to discuss and debate as well as providing a variety of activities to stimulate, encourage and interest our children. The lessons tackle topical issues in a safe and nurturing environment and allow the children to share their opinions with others. We make connections between learning in PSHE and real-life experiences children have or may likely to have encountered. Cross curricular links are also made, particularly in RE, Science and PE. We also make connections with wider aspects of school such as school rules, values, rewards and behaviour expectations.
Many elements of the PSHE curriculum are embedded within our school values which are:-
- Responsibility
- Respect
- Listeners
- Learners
- Kindness
- Honesty
PSHE in EYFS
At Webheath Academy Primary School, children develop skills that form a crucial foundation for later teaching of PSHE and RSE at Key Stage 1. Both curriculums complement each other, providing opportunities for progression throughout the school. The PSHE curriculum in EYFS is largely covered in the following areas: Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED) and Health and Self Care. The aims for teaching in the Foundation Stage come from the Development Matters Guidance and the Early Learning Goals. The three Early Learning Goals for PSED are:
- Making relationships
- Self-confidence and Awareness
- Managing Feelings and Behaviour
As part of the PSHE curriculum, all children in Years 1 –6 will receive Basic First Aid training delivered by fully trained professionals.

We also have themed weeks which the children take part in as a whole school studying PSHE themes such as Anti-bullying week, Healthy Eating week, Walk to School week and Wellbeing Week.
We are passionate about creating a culture of positive wellbeing and mental health and are committed to working together to help build a healthy, calm and happy school. We take part in World Mental Health Day and Children’s Mental Health Week to promote this. We are fortunate to have two members of staff who are trained Mental Health First Aiders to offer help and support for children.
