INTENT
At Webheath, we believe a high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity. We believe all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of biology, chemistry and physics through a fun and engaging curriculum. Through building up a body of key knowledge, key concepts and skills, pupils should be encouraged to recognise the power of thought, be encouraged to make links with prior knowledge and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave and analyse causes.
IMPLEMENTATION
Our teaching and learning follows the milestones within the Chris Quigley ‘Essentials’ Curriculum. Knowledge is taught in discrete units and working scientifically is taught and practised throughout the school. These skills are ‘deepened’ as the children progress through the Key Stages. Science is taught weekly, either in a stand-alone subject or embedded with our ‘Mantle’ which is the topic or dilemma which supports our learning. Through use of the ‘Mantle’ approach, children are also able to ask questions and also suggest what they would like to learn at the start of each teaching sequence. This allows teachers to adapt the programme of study to ensure that this captures the interests of the children and maximises their engagement and motivation to study science.
While it is key that pupils make progress, it is also vitally important that they develop secure understanding of each milestone in order to move on. Children’s starting points are identified at the beginning of each science topic and the children are encouraged to convey and record what they know already. Children’s knowledge is assessed continuously, through observation, discussion and assessment of written work. Children will be encouraged to learn and use specialist vocabulary accurately and this will be modelled by teachers and support staff. The science curriculum ensures that children are provided with regular opportunities to apply their mathematical knowledge to their understanding of science, including collecting, presenting and analysing data. They will also be encouraged to embed their English knowledge when recording scientifically. Children and staff will ensure they follow working safely practises at all times.
IMPACT
Our science curriculum results in a fun, engaging high quality science education throughout the school. Our children leave Year 6 with the foundations and knowledge for understanding the world needed for secondary education. They understand how science can change lives and how to protect the natural environment. Children at Webheath enjoy science resulting in motivated learners who think like scientists.
